EYFS – Early Years Foundation Stages

In the EYFS, children enjoy a caring environment that fosters positive feelings of self-worth and respect. Personal, social, emotional, physical and intellectual development take place through opportunities to engage in free and carefully structured play. With listening and reciprocity as our pedagogical belief, adults and children are seen as learning partners. Relationships, sense of community, valuing of ideas by adults and peers, freedom of expression and the development of multiple literacies are at the heart of the learning experience.

In order to ensure the child’s holistic development, the HSS EYFS has replaced subject titles with ‘Areas of Experience’ that are all equally important and interrelated. The areas also facilitate effective assessment of learning and development. The six areas of experience are:

  • Communication, Language and Literacy (English and Urdu)
  • Mathematical Development
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development (Art and Music)

The Hamilton Schooling System Junior & Senior curriculum is modelled after the Scottish Curriculum and the UK National Curriculum and covers Standards I to VIII. The international curriculum has been contextualized and adapted to local needs. It is taught in English with the exception of language classes and strives to develop knowledge, skills, values and cultural understanding. Our senior school programme includes the best aspects of teaching and learning and is designed keeping CAIE expectations in mind. Subject selection at this level is crucial in shaping future pathways and links between school, further study and the world of work. We are committed to embracing the cross curriculum priorities and general capabilities of the CAIE curriculum.

THE ROLE OF OUTDOOR LEARNING IN THE CURRICULUM

At HSS, we believe that outdoor learning is an important part of a good childhood and also important in raising standards within the school. We have embarked on a programme to develop exciting outdoor spaces that can be used throughout the school day, including an Outdoor classroom, plantation activities, School Refectory and a newly developed adventure play area.

Teachers are able to use the extensive areas to integrate outdoor learning within their topic plans right across the curriculum. School leaders work closely with children when developing the new learning areas and children's enjoyment is reflected in their good attendance and behaviour.

HOUSE POINTS

All our children are placed into one of our four houses: Leopards (Green), Panthers (Blue), Tigers (Red) and Jaguars (Yellow). Pupils receive house-points for good behaviour, hard work, and kindness to others. At the end of each week, the points from each house are counted and the winning house is announced in assembly. There is a trophy for the overall winner each year.

CO AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

At HSS we are committed to creating unlimited opportunities for all our pupils. We provide a wealth of extra-curricular activities for children of all ages at our school. We offer a diverse range that makes the most of our excellent resources and staff knowledge and expertise. Good education must encompass more than the standard academic subjects and HSS provides a wide range of age-appropriate, co-curricular activities.

  • We may collect personal information directly when you provide it to us, automatically as you navigate through the Sites or through other people when you use services associated with the Sites.
  • If you choose not to provide personal information, we may not be able to provide you with our services and you may not be able to carry out tran sactions or access the full range of features available through our Sites.

ART and Design

This programme offers opportunities to stimulate children’s creativity and imagination. It develops their understanding of colours, form, texture, and pattern, as well as their ability to use materials and processes to communicate ideas and feelings. Studying the arts allows students to learn more about their own culture as well as other cultures’ artistic traditions.

Music

Music is a part of our rich culture and tradition and all children deserve access to the joy and enrichment that can bring. Music also helps to develop a child’s listening skills and understanding of rhythm, sequence, phrase and pitch. The aim of music lessons at HSS is to foster an appreciation of music among students.

Physical Education and Games

HSS places great importance on sports activities in the curriculum, and of course it is now universally accepted as an integral part of an all - round education. Physical Education is part of the regular timetable for all students.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (SEN):

We make provision for pupils with a wide range of needs: learning, physical, emotional and social. We meet the needs of these pupils through careful planning of lessons, specific resources alongside our highly skilled team of teachers and teaching assistants. Our Special Educational Needs Manager works with parents, staff and pupils to ensure the best possible opportunities are provided for every child with special needs. We do all we can to ensure that all pupils, regardless of any special need, are fully involved in school life. We work to have an excellent and proven record with our pupils who encounter some form of difficulty with their learning. We believe that the key to this is building a strong and trusting relationship with parents and professionals.

HOME/SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP:

An effective education is based on a good relationship between home and school. It values the ability of both partners to work together to support the child. We firmly believe in this, and always encourage parents to take a full and active part in their child’s schooling.

If parents wish to speak to their child’s class teacher we encourage this but would prefer an after school appointment as the beginning of the school day can be hectic! Any urgent messages can be passed on to the teacher by the school office.

HOME LEARNING:

We believe that children benefit from home learning. We also believe that this should be offered in a way that doesn’t cause stress or difficulties at home. As a result, we have devised Home Learning challenges that support the learning in school and encourage a creative approach. Teachers are very aware that some pupils find homework very difficult so we ensure that there is time for children or parents to see your teacher if this is the case. Subjects such as reading, multiplication tables and spelling are areas that home can support at all times. If you have any questions as to how to best support your child, your son or daughter’s class teacher will be able to help.

LLRC-LIBRARY LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE:

The school has a newly designed and well-equipped LLRC and children are encouraged to take books home. We always foster a love of books and a keen interest in learning, which we hope parents will encourage at home. We regard books as one of the essential tools for learning.

REPORTING TO PARENTS:

At the end and mid of each academic year, each child will receive a written report. This will include evaluation about the progress made and targets for the future. Parents are offered two parent/teacher conferences throughout the year to discuss their child’s progress in each subject.

PARENT ASSEMBLIES:

We are keen to share your children’s wonderful learning and offer you opportunities throughout the year to attend class assemblies and view their books.

HEALTH AND SAFETY:

We aim to maintain a high standard of hygiene and children are encouraged to wash their hands after going to the toilet and before eating.

We ask that parents DO NOT park in the school car park unless they are eligible to do so. The whole school is a non-smoking area.

The school has a complete Health and Safety Policy available on request from the office.
